Fishs Eddy kitchen heaven

Fishs Eddy

This weekend I found myself in need of a few odds and ends in the kitchen. Fishs Eddy is hands down the best place to find all of the kitchen and serving gear you never knew you needed. They stock really basic flatware, standard white plates, glasses, silverware etc. but they also make their own series of really fun and cute designs. For example, their ‘Brooklynese’ line which features sawlt and peppa shakers, a buttah dish and a shuguh bowl. Perfect Brooklyn dialect.

This place is heaven. Every time I go I see a million things that I want, it’s almost as bad as going to the Barney’s shoe department (that is serious trouble for me). Sadly this trip I stuck to my shopping list. One crucial aspect of shopping in New York City is remembering that you have to get your purchases home. Unlike most other cities in America where you can pile your shopping in the back of you car most New Yorkers have to haul their shopping home. Often that means negotiating subways, walking several blocks, bumping into people…as you can imagine it’s a real hassel and can put a damper on buying bigger, heavier items. So aside from being able to afford a shopping spree you have to also be able to transport your indulgences. If it hadn’t been 85° out and I had a car I would have gotten a cute cake stand, a set of new bright blue mixing bowls and a few other cumbersome things. There’s always the online store for those though!

Oysters

Mary’s Fish Camp

One of my favorite ways to while away an evening it to head out for an oyster adventure with my boyfriend. I know that oysters are not for everyone – for many the raw sliminess is just too big of a turn off. But I happen to enjoy these slippery, salty sea creatures. There is a whole ritual surrounding the consumption of oysters that I love. First one has to tackle the menu; East Coast vs. West Coast, briny vs. sweet, Kumamoto vs. Beausoleil (in all honesty I like to close my eyes and let the fickle hand of fate decide for me). There is usually a bit of a bustle when the waiter brings out a platter brimming with ice and precariously balanced oysters. I find that a squirt of lemon juice is all the dressing up an oyster needs, too much horseradish kills the subtlety of the flavors for me. Finally sliding the oysters out of their shells straight into your mouth, trying not to dribble briny water down your chin, can be harder than it would seem. it’s always fun to compare notes on the different oysters, pretending to be a connoisseur. I can easily spend 2 hours slurping up oysters and sipping white wine, it’s a rather decadent way to spend an evening but well worth it.

One of my favorite NYC oyster spots at the moment is Upstate Craft Beer and Oyster Bar which is a really cool relaxed spot in the East Village. They have a great beer selection of unusual craft beers. Mary’s Fish Camp  ALWAYS has a wait but they do have a great menu for any seafood lover and an easy going bustling atmosphere.
