meet Humphrey & Baxter

Baxter and Humphrey

I admit it, I have two chihuahuas. I always feel like it is my dirty little secret. To be a blonde girl living in New York with any sort of toy breed makes you seem a bit precious. And the last thing I want is to be precious. Having said all of that please meet my little muffin tops of fluff and bulgy eyes Humphrey and Baxter! They are two little girls with boys names…I couldn’t very well have Cupcake and Princess Pants, that would have been too much.

Baxter

Baxter is a short hair chihuahua. she’s sweet and eager and throws up all of the time.

Humphrey

Humphrey, a long hair chihuahua, is a bit more reserved, doesn’t ever throw up and makes cute grunting sounds a lot.

Baxter – neighborhood watch

When they aren’t looking out the window and policing the streets of the West Village (Humphrey literally hurls herself at the window in a fit of yappy rage every time she sees a dog walking on the street below her) they come into the gallery with me.

Commute to work

I pack them in a bag and off we go.

Humphrey contemplates the show

Most of the time they sleep under my desk, occasionally they man the front door and sometimes they just like to look at the art.

So you can see that they embody perfection.

Fishs Eddy kitchen heaven

Fishs Eddy

This weekend I found myself in need of a few odds and ends in the kitchen. Fishs Eddy is hands down the best place to find all of the kitchen and serving gear you never knew you needed. They stock really basic flatware, standard white plates, glasses, silverware etc. but they also make their own series of really fun and cute designs. For example, their ‘Brooklynese’ line which features sawlt and peppa shakers, a buttah dish and a shuguh bowl. Perfect Brooklyn dialect.

This place is heaven. Every time I go I see a million things that I want, it’s almost as bad as going to the Barney’s shoe department (that is serious trouble for me). Sadly this trip I stuck to my shopping list. One crucial aspect of shopping in New York City is remembering that you have to get your purchases home. Unlike most other cities in America where you can pile your shopping in the back of you car most New Yorkers have to haul their shopping home. Often that means negotiating subways, walking several blocks, bumping into people…as you can imagine it’s a real hassel and can put a damper on buying bigger, heavier items. So aside from being able to afford a shopping spree you have to also be able to transport your indulgences. If it hadn’t been 85° out and I had a car I would have gotten a cute cake stand, a set of new bright blue mixing bowls and a few other cumbersome things. There’s always the online store for those though!

Jonathan Adler POP candles

Jonathan Adler POP candles

I have always been a bit wary of scented candles. Primarily the idea of covering up pre-existing odors, Febreze style, is horrific to me. Slowly though I came to realize that scent can be used to enhance a (clean) room much the way accent pillows or a selection of photographs can personalize a space. Candles and diffusers have since become an aspect of my apartment that I am quite thoughtful with.

A few months ago I came across the collection of POP candles at Jonathan Adler. These candles come in sleek modern glasses, in colors representative of their scents. The selection of flavors (they are much like flavors) is well edited and sophisticated – clean and crisp; watercress, pepper, grapefruit and fig to name a few. I LOVE them. My three favorites happen to be Earl Grey, Pepper and Sugar. I like to have Early Grey in my bedroom. Bergamot is the scent in Early Grey, most commonly associated with tea. It’s a sweet and soothing scent, clean and soft. I find it feels like an updated and sophisticated lavender or chamomile but equally evocative of rest and calm. Pepper on the other hand is a strong bold scent. It still has a sweet undertone but also a woody spiciness. A winter smell for cold evenings snuggled up on the sofa with a good book and a blanket. Sugar is just plain sweet, as it should be. There is a touch of vanilla in it which creates that wonderful cake batter smell without being too literal.

I am very curious about the watercress and tomato candles. Sounds like I could be writing a shopping list for tomorrow’s salad but I suspect that they will perfectly balanced and be just this side of fresh without smelling too much like a farm stand.

I highly recommend giving these candles a try. You can find them here: Candle Delirium
