runway inspired Halloween manicures

A friend of mine, Hannah Morrill, asked me to come up with some runway inspired Halloween manicures for Harpersbazaar.com. I took ideas from Ruffian, Jenni Kayne, Prabal Gurung and Chanel runway looks to make a bit more real life friendly designs.

Prabal Gurung bloody tips:

I saw the Prabal Gurung manicure recreated all over the internet but kept thinking ‘who wants to look like they have been scratching off their mosquito bites?’ Somehow the runway version was a bit too literal for me. So I came up with something a bit more wearable. I love this manicure. It’s subtle enough for everyday. At first glance it reads as a plain red manicure but up close you see the shiny drips of blood. For more impact you can always apply the drips in a deeper red to amp up the contrast between the base color and the dripping ‘blood.’

Kate Spade polka dots gone googly eyes:

Everyone knows polka dots are in, everything is spotted and dotted up the wazoo. I liked the idea of reinterpreting  the  polka dot into googly eyes. Essie’s new Stylnomics hits on the rich jewels tones of Kate Spade’s fall collection so I thought it would make a great base color.

Jenni Kayne pumpkin french:

In the same vein of finding bloody nails less than appealing, recreating smoker’s jaundiced nails seems kind of gross to me as well. But the french manicure is a classic and I’ve been seeing multicolored french manicures all over the place. Enter the pumpkin french, I loved the Chanel beige and shimmering orange combo, and it doesn’t make you look like a chain smoker!

Ruffian / Chanel velvet silhouette:

Velvet manicures seem very popular right now. Ruffian had amazing 2 toned half moon manicures on their models for their fall 2012 runway show. there is something so luxurious and sophisticated about velvet. I have herd mixed reviews on the Ciate Velvet manicure sets but still can’t get the look off my mind. I decided to combine the Chanel cruise collection‘s silhouetted manicure with the sultry palette and texture of Ruffian’s fall nails. Matte top coat is amazing and really transforms the effect of a manicure.

sweater time!

I guess I’m not the only one with sweaters on the brain. Yesterday’s post came about because I finally transferred my summer clothes out for my winter clothes (read: unpacking LOTS of sweaters). Rediscovering favorite items from past seasons is quiet invigorating.

Today my friend (and AMAZING trainer) Raquel asked me about sweaters, what to look for and where to get them. She’s new to the east coast and doesn’t have the massive sweater collection that a New Englander might have. It got me thinking of some knitwear basics. I am surprisingly quite utilitarian in my knitwear preferences. My one rule; a sweater is meant to serve one purpose above all others, that it to keep you warm. So you will not see me in backless sweaters, or cashmere tube tops (they make them, I swear). If a sweater doesn’t have some thermal properties it has no business being a sweater. What’s the point in a wooly turtle neck without sleeves? Your torso is warm but your arms will fall off. If it’s warm enough for your arms to be bare chances are it’s too warm for a sweater.

1. the fitted sweater: Sweaters don’t have to be boxy and unflattering. Dare I say it is possible to look sharp and even sexy AND stay warm.

This is a great sweater. Fitted waist = feminine. The leather sleeves on this are actually tighter on a real person (not a stick insect), I’ve tried it on. And it’s BURGUNDY, color au courant, which I think flatters most complexions. Imagine this sweater with a pencil skirt, maybe a thin belt and some pumps and you are set for work. Notch up those heels, add a smokey eye and you’re ready for a sexy evening.

2. the chunky knit: My grandmother always used to knit Aran sweaters for me and my brother. I loved them, but they were itchy. Anywho, I can’t go without having a sweater of a similar nature in my closet, cream colored chunky cable knit, cardigan or pullover.

Again applicable to many skin tones and complexions. Great with skinny jeans and knee high boots, a good look for farmer’s markets, pumpkin patch -ing? and wintry jaunts. This can actually be a sweater to splurge on. It’s a style what will never be super trendy or super untrendy, it just is. I vouch for it. It can also be good to head to the men’s department when looking for this sweater. That’s how I found one of my favorites.

This is a way more reasonably priced option, but a girl can dream of luxury sweaters.

3. the fun sweater: Just because it’s knitted doesn’t been it has to be bland and boring either. A lively color or pattern is such a relief in the grayer months of the year. Have you ever noticed that you feel better when you wear bright colors? I swear you cannot be glum when you wear bright pink.

I love this sweater from J. Crew. Cabarnet with punchy pink spots. I love it.

I also think this blue and yellow leopard print from ASOS.com is really fun. Definitely a jazzy and invigorating pattern for a gloomy day.

4. the slouchy sweater: AKA the boyfriend sweater. I actually recommend sticking to the women’s section when looking for a boyfriend sweater – go figure. I like a deep V-neck to counter balance the bagginess of the sweater (maybe a strip of lace from a camisole or bra poking out…).

This is the sweater that you throw over a pair of leggings and get super cozy in. I like it to be long enough to cover my butt (remember leggings). Usually best in cashmere. You want it to be the most enticing thing in your closet on a cold blustery day. You can also put a belt over it if you want to leave the house but don’t want to be too shapeless.

So there you have some basics. Just four, trying to keep it simple so obviously there are tons of other options and styles but I find that these are my sweater stables.

some more summer favorites

Lemlem split scarf

This Lemlem scarf has been one of my favorite accessories all summer. First and foremost Lemlem is a great organization. The company was started by Liya Kebede (famous Ethiopian model) as a way to bolster the Ethiopian textile industry and simultaneously supply us with some great cotton clothes and accessories. The result is fantastic.

The split scarves by Lemlem are great. I have always had some difficulty perfecting the effortless draped scarf look. I’m a smart girl, but obviously not that smart. Well Lemlem’s solution was to sew two narrow scarves together leaving a slit in the middle of them to pop your head through and then wrap the ends around as you see fit. Voila, draping for dummies. It’s genius, I promise.

The cotton is gauzy and light and all of the color combinations are awesome. I highly recommend investing in one of these scarves, especially for the transition into fall.

basic chambray

Chambray has had its rebirth and with good reason. I have been rocking my chambray shirt every way that I can. Paired with soffe shorts for early morning coffee runs to the deli or tucked into pencil skirt for work or as an extra layer over a cute dress for dinner. My chambray shirt is one of the most versatile items in my closet. I am trying to wash it as often as possible to achieve the ultimate broken in comfort that comes with years of wear. This shirt will be under heavy rotation throughout the year. I’m already thinking of how to pair it with burgundy and camel for the fall.

Dayna wedge at Shoemint

Another one of my summertime go to’s has been a pair of platform wedges I got from Shoemint.com. To be honest I am not really sure what Shoemint is or how it works. All I know is I have found some great shoes there and they only cost around $80 (I see now that mine are now on sale for $40, but I did get to wear them all summer so there is a trade off). This pair has been one of my favorites. The multicolored stripe is subtle enough to read as a nude but can also pick up any colors you may pair them with; pale pink jeans, mint green dress, navy blue shorts to name a few. And last but not least, these shoes have proven to be pretty comfortable. Unfortunately due to the espadrille wedge I probably won’t be able to wear them too far into the fall but I feel as though I definitely got $80 worth of wear out of them.

Kain Maren skirt

One of the all time favorite items in my closet is a long white washed silk skirt. I got it maybe 2 years ago and haven’t stopped wearing it (except in the dead of winter – long silk isn’t so great when you are wearing tights in the colder months. The static is crippling, literally, I can’t take more then 3 steps before yards of silk start to twist around my ankles and effectively tie my legs together). Mine is by Kain but there is a great skirt on sale at Shopbop by Rachel Zoe that looks perfect. Long skirts can go in so many directions, comfortable or sexy depending on how you want to play it. In the summer I like to wear a loose white tank, layer a bunch of different long gold necklaces smear of some lip gloss and I’m set. I also love the idea of pairing this with a chunky sweater and some brown boots for the fall. the options abound.

Helmut Newton superwomen

Helmut Newton is one of my favorite photographers.

Helmut Newton, Two Pairs of Legs in Black Stocking, 1979

Originally from Berlin, Newton lived in Australia, France and America. He started working with Vogue as early as the mid 1950s but didn’t really come into recognized success until the 70s with his work for Vogue France. He was married to June Brunell (who later changed her name to Alice Springs). They would work together – she became a renown photographer in her own right. Sadly Newton passed away in 2004.

His work can tend to the commercial but at the same time be very provocative, keeping it satisfyingly shocking.

Newton and models, Helmut Newton, Vogue Studio, 1981

And his subjects are always FIERCE. Through setting, highly contrasted lighting and dramatic poses he creates some of the most powerful photographs you can find.

Helmut Newton, Tied-up Torso, Ramatuelle, 1980

His work often evokes S&M and plays with the role of domination. But the women always seem to be in control. They are an object  but I never feel as though they are being objectified. They command their own presence.

Helmut Newton, Elsa Perretti in Halston Bunny Costume, 1975

He rarely shot in studios, preferring real interiors or streetscapes.

Helmut Newton, They’re Coming (naked), 1981

Helmut Newton, They’re Coming!, 1981

A wonderful series of work he did in the 80s was The Naked and the Undressed. These photos comprise some of his best known work.

His work can be really perverse.

Bulgari was rumored to have been a bit upset with this photo…they didn’t like their jewels dismembering a chicken. That cavity is so raunchy and gross.

Helmut Newton, Jenny Capitain, Pension Florian, Berlin, 1977

I find Newton’s work glamorous, sexy and empowering.

August evenings – 2 looks

I always think white jeans look so crisp. You can dress them up enough to look elegant and hip without ever feeling overdone. This sweater has been one of my favorite additions to my summer wardrobe, it’s an awesome heathered neon. Just a touch of blue with the bangle is really punchy. Tom Ford’s Santal Blush has been a favorite scent this summer. It’s quite heavy and sultry, hence a great evening scent. It tends to morph and mold itself to your skin, it develops into a whole new perfume as you wear it.

This is admittedly an old outfit, I wore it on my first date with my boyfriend a year ago. Even if it is from August 2011 it’s still a great August go to. The rusty red cardigan is light enough for 80°+ evenings and adds an extra dimension to the look. High waisted skirts are a girl’s best friend, especially when they have a bell or tulip shape. This immediately elongates your legs as well as making them look slimmer (always a plus) cinched at the waist with a skinny belt and your waist will be looking tiny too! Throw on some strappy sandals with a platform and you look girly but not too fussy.
